East Java Surf Spots
Grajagan
Grajagan or G-Land is the common name for the reef situated at the eastern fringe of a huge Bay. The reef is surrounded by the Plengkung National Forest which is one of the last wild pieces of jungle left in Java. The surf spot is named after the fishing village of Grajagan which is situated at the western end of the bay. Grajagan is a massive coral reef, typical of Indonesian reefs except it is so long.
Kongs
The first surfing part of the reef is known as Kong's. It is a series of long sectiony parts that break on relatively deep reef shelves. Kong's has a reputation as more of a hotdog type wave but on the right swell (about 6 feet) long barrels can be found. It is usually surfed on smaller days with light winds and a lower tide. However, it is often windy and uninviting. Kong's is a bit of a walk from the camps, then a bit of a mission over the exposed reef (or paddle at higher tides) and then a lot of paddling.
Moneytrees
Moneytrees breaks in the mid section of the reef. It's a fast almond shaped barrel that can work from 2 to 10 foot conditions. Barrels of a lifetime can be had out here. Moneytrees gets gnarly on a lower tide and the mid tide is best. Take care when pulling out as bad timing will get you drilled. To paddle out, aim for the channel off the final section of Kong's.
Launching Pads and Speedies
The next part of the reef is known as Launching Pads. As Moneytrees starts closing out Launching Pads comes to life. It's where you take off before getting into the next part of the reef known as Speedies or Speed Reef. Speedies doesn't come into play until the swell hits about 6 - 8 feet. It's an exceptionally hollow wave that pitches almost perfectly over an unforgiving part of the reef for about 150m. Some say Speedies is the jewel in the crown of Grajagan. It is not for the faint hearted and extreme care should be taken as the tide gets low.
All sections of Grajagan change with the tide. On bigger days you will be continually paddling to keep yourself in position so a good set of paddling arms is essential.
