Lombok Surf Spots
Gili Air
Situated on the closest of three islands just off Lombok's mainland is a right hander called Gili Air (also known as Perama). This reef produces long very clean rights with nice barrel sections from 2 - 6ft. The problem is it needs a huge south to south west swell to make it work. A very rare wave but if you get it firing it's well worth the effort. You will need to arrange a return boat from the mainland. Otherwise you could catch a boat and stay in one of the many losmens situated on the island. Boats are usually arranged from Senggigi or Bangsal.
Gili Trawangan
Gili Trawangan is the furthest of the three Gili islands. It also has a right hander that works with the same massive swells as Gili Air. At first glance it looks awesome but breaks too fast and sections too much. If you want to give it a try, a boat can be caught from Gili Air. All three islands have heaps of accommodation, very laid back, great snorkling etc.
Senggigi Lefts and Rights
There is a left and a right situated in this resort area. Both these waves need big south west swells to work. The left sections out a lot and is not really worth the effort unless you are staying in the area when it is breaking. The right hander is slightly better but is often blown out in the trade wind season. Again only really worth the effort if you are in the area. They are both mid to high tide waves.
Desert Point
Many surfers class this left hand reef break as the best in the world when all conditions are right. Being so fickle has caused many a surfer to endure long, long waits for the right conditions to come together. 4 to 6ft is best on a low to mid tide with 8ft getting really intense and for advanced surfers only. After taking off Deserts can barrel the entire length of the wave. With modern technology and surf forecasting so advanced these days it's hard to get this wave uncrowded. Surfers staying and living in Bali will quickly arrange boats, flights etc and head on over when the swell turns on.
Blongas Bay
This is a remote beautiful area and not easy to get to. Many surfers opt to travel here by boat. The west side of the bay has a nice consistent right hander that works best with NE winds in the rainy season. There is a nice left on the east side of the bay that works in east to southeast winds. This wave can be fickle.
Mawi
About 30 minutes west of Kuta is Mawi. You need to park (and pay) then it’s about a 100 metre walk to the beach. There is a right and left situated in a beautiful bay. This place picks up a lot of swell compared to other breaks in the area. The left hander breaks nicely in bigger swell conditions on any tide and offers the odd barrel and nice rippable walls. The right hander will break in smaller swells but is best on the incoming mid tide. You can find tubes on the right as well. Both waves work best with light winds.
Mawun
15 minutes west from Kuta. There is a left and a right at either end of the bay. The right hander can be found on the western end. This wave lines up well and is great fun. It is consistent and works best with light winds or in the wet season. The left at the eastern end of the bay is a very average break. The dry season winds are more favourable for this wave. Both these waves will get gnarly with big swells.
Air Goleng
These breaks can be accessed by land or a boat ride from Kuta. A left and right break infront of Air Goleng village. The rights can provide nice rides with low tides making for best conditions. Light winds are preferred. The left to the east is an average wave that works best on high tides.
Kuta
While Kuta is a great place to stay and plan your surf trips from, it doesn't have very good waves. The reef that runs along the beach has some average waves at either end that usually leave you less than inspired.
Pantai Seger
Approximately 1 km east of Kuta, near the Hotel Novotel, you will find some nice fun rights. This spot can handle swells up to 6ft with light winds being the best.
Pantai A'an
About 5 km east of Kuta lies Pantai Aan. Also known as Tanjung A'an (or Aan). This right hander works best with swells in the 2-8ft range and east winds are best. Nice barrels can be had out here. You need a large south swell to make this place work. Take caution on the low tides as it gets really shallow.
Grupuk Bay
The next surfing spot going east from Pantai A'an is Grupuk Bay. There are a number of waves here that need a boat to get to. Outside rights can hold big swells up to 10ft. There are no barrels and the walls are fat but you can score some nice drops here. This wave is more open to swell. Insides is found further inside the bay and runs down the reef near Perigi Island. Mid tide and a south-southwest swell is needed to make it break. It breaks best at 2-6ft. Near Grupuk village is a wave known as Kid's Point. As the name suggests it is soft and more of a beginners wave. It needs a large south swell to break. The best wave in the bay is known as Don-Don. It is a fun right hander with fullish walls and long rides. It breaks best with mid to high tides. There are also fun lefts that run off the right handers.
Inside Ekas
Find your way to Awang Village and from there you need to hire a boat to Inside Ekas or Outside Ekas. Apparently you can hire a boat from Grupuk Bay as well. On the lower tides Insides is a nice right hander with a few barrels but mostly fatter walls. On the higher tide the left starts to fire with some nice waves on offer. It needs a bigger swell outside to get in here and an east wind is best.
Outside Ekas
Offers some very long left handers with some nice barrels to be had. It is best on the high tide with larger southwest swells. When it is bigger a lot of water moves around here causing strong currents.
Sereweh
You can drive overland from Mataram (which is a bit of a mission) or you can hire a boat from Awang Village. If other places are flat Sereweh will have some right handers. These waves are best surfed when the winds are light so early morning is favourable.
Labuhan Haji
It is best to drive to Labuhan Haji from Mataram. There are several right handers breaking along the black sand coast here. The waves need large swells to break, preferably a south swell. West winds are best with wave height 2-8ft.
